Highlights from the IWCE 2018

Last week we attended the annual International Window Covering Expo in Tampa, FL, hosted by Window Fashion Vision Magazine. Because of our mission is to innovate and create the best motorized drapery rod and track hardware possible, and understanding drapery and consumer drapery trends is imperative, our goal was to learn as much as possible about drapery and curtain making. We came away with answers to all of our questions, and a much deeper understanding of drapery products. Here are a few of our key takeaways from the show:

  • Drapery Track for Residential
  • Pinch Pleat is King
  • People want Modern, but not minimalist

Drapery Track

Track drapery has always been popular for commercial and hospitality, but drapery rod has been a more popular, decorative option for residential spaces. Track, however, is extremely functional for blocking out light, as there are hardware solutions available to cover the light gap created by a center draw application. Track is also easier for manufacturers to motorize than a drapery rod. Because of this, many motorized drapery rods are actually tracks implanted into a rod façade. Others, however, are honoring the hardware and developing track systems with a contemporary aesthetic. And, if a customer doesn’t like the look of track, there are always valances or facias.

Pinch Pleat

All hail pinch pleat! Pinch pleat has always been an extremely popular top treatment for drapery, and it still reigns supreme. Double and Triple finger pinch pleat curtains are extremely versatile, fitting in with traditional or contemporary décor. Pinch pleat also looks great in both rod and track applications, either attached to a track via drapery pins, or attached to a rod via rings.

Modern, Not Minimalist

Contemporary facias, neutral colors, modern acrylic rods and finials, and motorization are all in. While the minimalist movement has ruled for some time, and been complimented by roller shades, consumers are wanting stuff again- modern stuff. Draperies take up space along the wall and are decorative; they therefore act as a perfect window covering for the phasing out of the minimalist trend but maintain a modern element. There are both drapery track and drapery rod options for modern window coverings, so consumers can choose what works best for them.
